Tribute of the Ateneo de La Laguna to its first president, the poet José Hernández Amador, one of the founders who was born in October 1877 and who began his work as president on November 25, 1904.
José Hernández Amador is perhaps the Spanish writer who most resembles the Saint of Assisi in human and poetic terms.
Sebastián Padrón Acosta said of him: "Unable to do evil, he forgives everything and lives in the sung castle of his dreams, a chimera garden where the roses of his sentiment and cordiality open. A golden gust falls on his moon flakes. Franciscan . ..” (Canary Island Poets of the 19th and 20th Centuries, Tenerife 1966, 366).
His work is characterized by his love for his country and mystical compositions. The poem " The Shadow of the Brother of Assisi " in the purest modernist technique is the product of his continuous readings of the saints. It was read publicly at the inauguration of the Cathedral of La Laguna in 1913.
