This artwork, designed by Indian sculptor Ram Sutar , was gifted by the Indian government in 2018 on the occasion of Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary.
The bust shows Gandhi in his old age with his eyes closed and rests on a stone plinth about two metres high. A plaque on the plinth bears the quote: "There is no way to peace, for peace is the way".
The location of the bust was chosen symbolically (at a secondary school with an international exchange with India) because of the long-standing partnership between the Auguste-Viktoria-Gymnasium and a school in India. This bust is not only a tribute to Gandhi's principles of nonviolence and justice, but also a symbol of the cultural and educational ties between Trier and India.
The Indian artist Ram V. Sutar , who created the bust of Gandhi, is known worldwide for his monumental works, including the largest statue in the world : the Statue of Unity in India (182 meters high).
