Ian
Flemming based his famous character M. on an English spymaster Maxwell
Knight. This Maxwell Knight owned the Royal Oak Inn of
Withypool. In the same Royal Oak Inn, Eisenhower stayed during World War II. The nearby Woolacombe beach was used to simulate the invasion of Normandy, and General Dwight Eisenhower planned some of the operation from the Royal Oak. Alfred Munnings is known as England's finest painter of horses. He had a studio in the loft of the same Royal Oak Inn of Withypool. |
