Did you know that the first signposted nature walk was made in the 'Fôret de Fontainebleau' , a forest area south of Paris. A number of painters who had fled Paris lived there and many wealthy people came by during the summer months. In the forest were trees hundreds of years old that had never been cut, it was full of peculiar rocks. But that landscape was tamed in 1842 when a man, Claude-François Denecourt , started to set up footpaths. This also made him the inventor of the signposted nature trail. Claude-François Denecourt was a veteran of the Napoleonic army who devoted most of his life to developing and disclosing the resources of the Fontainebleau forest.
