Machu Picchu was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983. It is a popular tourist attraction, which is of great significance for the tourism of the whole region. The site attracts around 400,000 visitors a year, much to the concern of UNESCO, who fear this large number of visitors will further damage the city.
