Tannheim es la localidad principal del valle de Tannheim, que es atravesado por el Vils. Forma un pueblo agrupado, que está rodeado de pequeñas aldeas que han crecido hasta convertirse en asentamientos más grandes debido a expansiones de asentamientos más recientes.
Se puede llegar a Tannheim o al valle de Tannheim desde Weißenbach por el paso de Gaicht, desde Hindelang por el paso de Oberjoch o desde Pfronten a través del valle de Enge.
