La Außerfernbahn es una línea ferroviaria de 93,920 kilómetros de longitud, de vía estándar y de un solo carril, que cruza la frontera entre Baviera y Tirol. Se extiende desde Kempten a través de Pfronten, Reutte hasta Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Su nombre proviene del Außerfern, que es la región que conecta. La línea fue inaugurada entre 1895 y 1913 y conecta el Außerfern con la Mittenwaldbahn y la línea de tren Múnich-Garmisch-Partenkirchen al este, así como con la línea de tren Buchloe-Lindau y la Illertalbahn al oeste. El tramo austríaco funciona como una operación aislada en relación con el resto de la red ferroviaria austriaca. Entre Garmisch-Partenkirchen y Pfronten-Steinach está electrificada.
