La ligne de chemin de fer Außerfernbahn mesure 93,920 kilomètres de long, c'est une ligne à écartement normal, à voie unique, transfrontalière entre la Bavière et le Tyrol. Elle s'étend de Kempten à travers Pfronten, Reutte jusqu'à Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Elle doit son nom à l'Außerfern, qu'elle dessert. La ligne a été inaugurée entre 1895 et 1913 et relie l'Außerfern à la Mittenwaldbahn et à la ligne de chemin de fer Munich–Garmisch-Partenkirchen à l'est, ainsi qu'à la ligne de chemin de fer Buchloe–Lindau et à l'Illertalbahn à l'ouest. Le tronçon autrichien est, par rapport au reste du réseau ferroviaire autrichien, un service insulaire. Entre Garmisch-Partenkirchen et Pfronten-Steinach, elle est électrifiée.
