El lago se encuentra en el territorio del municipio de Kartitsch a una altitud de 2300 m sobre el nivel del mar, debajo de la cresta principal de los Carnic, que forma la frontera con la provincia italiana de Belluno. El lago está rodeado por las cumbres Cima Frugnoni, Pfannspitze y Rosskopf. En la orilla norte se encuentra el refugio Obstansersee.
