Il lago si trova nel comune di Kartitsch a un'altitudine di 2300 m s.l.m. sotto il principale crinale carnico, che forma il confine con la provincia italiana di Belluno. Il lago è circondato dalle vette della Cima Frugnoni, Pfannspitze e Rosskopf. Sulla riva nord si trova il rifugio Obstansersee.
