Le lac est situé dans la commune de Kartitsch à une altitude de 2300 m au-dessus du niveau de la mer, en dessous de la chaîne principale des Alpes carniques, qui forme la frontière avec la province italienne de Belluno. Le lac est entouré par les sommets du Cima Frugnoni, du Pfannspitze et du Rosskopf. Sur la rive nord se trouve le refuge Obstansersee.
