Artevelde fue un empresario y estadista de Gante. Negoció ganado, pescado, vino, plata y textil. Vivía en Kalandeberg, y fue asesinado cerca de su casa en Paddenhoek el 17 de julio de 1345. Algunas versiones mencionan que esto ocurrió cuando intentaba huir de su hogar, otras versiones afirman que sucedió cuando regresaba a casa tras discusiones en Damme. Lo que sí hay consenso es que fue asesinado por Gerard Denijs, maestro del gremio de tejedores.
