Artevelde was een zakenman en staatsman van Gent. Hij handelde vee, vis, wijn, zilver en textiel. Hij woonde aan de Kalandeberg, en werd vlakbij zijn woonst in de Paddenhoek vermoord op 17 juli 1345. Sommige versie vermelden dat dit was toen hij wou vluchten uit zijn huis, andere versies beweren dat dit gebeurde toen hij thuis kwam na besprekingen in Damme. Waar wel eensgezingdheid over bestaat is dat hij zou vermoord zijn door Gerard Denijs, meester van de wevers-gilde.
