Artevelde était un homme d'affaires et un homme d'État de Gand. Il commerçait du bétail, du poisson, du vin, de l'argent et des textiles. Il vivait au Kalandeberg, et a été assassiné près de chez lui dans la Paddenhoek le 17 juillet 1345. Certaines versions mentionnent que cela s'est produit lorsqu'il a tenté de fuir sa maison, d'autres versions affirment que cela s'est produit alors qu'il rentrait chez lui après des réunions à Damme. Ce sur quoi il y a un consensus, c'est qu'il a été tué par Gerard Denijs, maître de la guilde des tisserands.
