No se conoce mucho sobre San Bavo. Después de su labor misionera con San Amandus, Bavo habría recibido permiso para vivir como ermitaño en el bosque detrás de la abadía de San Pedro. Probablemente murió alrededor del año 650 y fue enterrado en la iglesia de San Pedro, fundada por Amandus, que se encontraba en el actual barrio de la abadía de San Bavón. Aún se puede ver la conversión de San Bavo en un cuadro de Rubens en la catedral de San Bavón.
