El residente más famoso de Tongeren es sin duda Ambiorix, rey de los Eburones. Le debemos a él que Julio César llamara a los belgas los ‘más valientes de todos los galos’. Sí, César recibió una buena paliza de los Belgas, pero la superioridad romana demostró ser demasiado grande al final. Ambiorix pudo huir, leído: desapareció sin dejar rastro. Tanto es así que los historiadores dudan de que realmente haya existido. A pesar del escepticismo, Ambiorix recibió una estatua en 1866.
