Le plus célèbre habitant de Tongres est sans aucun doute Ambiorix, roi des Éburons. C’est à lui que nous devons les mots de Jules César: “De tous les peuples de la Gaule, les Belges sont les plus braves”. Si César a en effet reçu une bonne raclée des Belges, la suprématie romaine l’a finalement emporté. Quant à Ambiorix, il a disparu sans laisser de traces. À tel point que les historiens vont jusqu’à douter de son existence. Mais ce scepticisme n’a pas empêché le personnage de se voir dédier une statue en 1866.
