"El Vaartkom de Lovaina" es una pintura de Louis-Marie Autissier. La obra de los pintores más famosos ha sido alabada durante siglos. Pero lo que es aún más espectacular es el trabajo que se realizó en este canal. El canal Leuven-Mechelen fue excavado a partir de 1750 por 500 campesinos de las Ardenas. La minería aún no había traído trabajo y bienestar a Valonia. Los trabajadores, casi siempre campesinos, migraban temporalmente a viviendas expropiadas cerca del trazado del canal. Por un salario diario de más de 2 francos, cavaban 11 horas al día el lecho del canal de 30 kilómetros de longitud. La única ayuda provenía de palas, carretillas, tablones y primitivos dispositivos de elevación de madera. Se trabajó durante dos años antes de que en 1752 pudiera fluir el primer agua en el canal.
