De Moeren es un drenaje. Al final de la Edad Media, la zona de De Moeren consistía en un paisaje pantanoso de baja altitud con dos grandes estanques, la Kleine y la Grote Moere, donde se formaba turba. En la Edad Media, aquí se extraía la antigua turba como turba. A principios del siglo XVII, los entonces gobernantes de los Países Bajos del Sur, el archiduque Alberto y la archiduquesa Isabel, mostraron interés en un posible desagüe de la zona.
