Le Moeren sono un'area di bonifica. Alla fine del Medioevo, l'area delle Moeren era costituita da una zona paludosa a bassa quota con due grandi stagni, la Piccola e la Grande Moere, dove si formava torba. Nel Medioevo, qui veniva estratta la vecchia torba. All'inizio del XVII secolo, i sovrani dell'epoca delle Fiandre meridionali, l'arciduca Alberto e l'arciduchessa Isabella, mostrarono interesse per una possibile bonifica dell'area. Non solo la bonifica avrebbe significato un prezioso ampliamento della superficie agricola, ma la palude era anche nota negativamente come rifugio per briganti e sospetti e come fonte di varie malattie.
