El nombre proviene del nombre germánico Snello, el sufijo -inga y el topónimo heem, y significa "lugar de residencia de los hombres de Snello".
Snellegem ya era en la temprana Edad Media un dominio real merovingio. El Oosthof era la granja central. La iglesia más antigua fue probablemente construida en el siglo VII junto a esta granja. En 941, Snellegem fue mencionado por primera vez, específicamente como Snethlingehem. Alrededor de 953 se hizo mención de una nueva iglesia.
