The name comes from the Germanic name Snello, the suffix -inga and the toponym heem and thus means "residence of the people of Snello".
Snellegem was already a Merovingian crown domain in the early Middle Ages. The Oosthof was the central farm. The oldest church was probably built next to this farm in the 7th century. In 941 Snellegem was mentioned for the first time, as Snethlingehem. Around 953 a new church was mentioned.
