Der Name stammt von dem germanischen Namen Snello, dem Suffix -inga und dem Toponym heem und bedeutet somit "Wohnsitz der Leute von Snello".
Snellegem war bereits im frühen Mittelalter ein merowingisches Krondomäne. Der Osthof war der zentrale Hof davon. Die älteste Kirche wurde vermutlich im 7. Jahrhundert neben diesem Hof errichtet. Im Jahr 941 wurde Snellegem erstmals erwähnt, und zwar als Snethlingehem. Um 953 wurde von einer neuen Kirche berichtet.
