Wortel es una aldea en la provincia belga de Amberes y un municipio de la ciudad de Hoogstraten. Wortel fue un municipio independiente hasta la reorganización municipal de 1977. La zona alrededor de Wortel ya estaba habitada en tiempos prehistóricos. En 1155, Wortel fue mencionado por primera vez, como Wurtelam. Es posible que Wortel se separara de Rijkevorsel en algún momento entre los siglos IX y XII. Alrededor de 1300 se hablaba del señor de Wortel y Hoogstraten, y desde entonces Wortel ha estado estrechamente vinculado con la Tierra de Hoogstraten. Desde 1740 hasta 1794, Wortel estuvo unido en unión personal con los duques de Hoogstraten. Luego, Wortel se convirtió en un municipio independiente.
