Wortel is een dorp in de Belgische provincie Antwerpen en een deelgemeente van de stad Hoogstraten. Wortel was een zelfstandige gemeente tot aan de gemeentelijke herindeling van 1977.Het gebied rond Wortel werd reeds in prehistorische tijden bewoond. In 1155 werd Wortel voor het eerst vermeld, als Wurtelam. Mogelijk splitste Wortel zich ergens tussen de 9e en 12e eeuw af van Rijkevorsel. Omstreeks 1300 was sprake van heer van Wortel en Hoogstraten en sindsdien was Wortel nauw met het Land van Hoogstraten verbonden. Vanaf 1740 tot 1794 was Wortel in personele unie verbonden met de hertogen van Hoogstraten. Daarna werd Wortel een zelfstandige gemeente.
