El embalse sirve principalmente para recoger el gran volumen de agua (y también un poco de sedimento) de los campos, para que los arroyos más abajo en Ouwegem y las áreas adyacentes no se inunden. Hay un control del nivel. Si el agua más abajo alcanza un nivel demasiado alto, el agua se retiene temporalmente en el embalse (con una especie de compuerta).
