Het wachtbekken dient vooral om het vele water (een ook een beetje slib) van akkers op te vangen – zodat de verder in Ouwegem gelegen beken en aanpalende gebieden niet zouden overstromen. Er is een peilcontrole. Als het water verder afwaarts te hoog komt te staan, wordt het water tijdelijk opgehouden in het wachtbekken (met een soort stuw).
