Sobre su inspiración para esta plaza, Bas Smets dice lo siguiente. Las líneas provienen de la Piazza del Campo en Siena. A la pregunta de por qué no podían haber demasiados árboles en la plaza, su respuesta fue: "para que la excepcional calidad de las fachadas pueda ser apreciada".
