'Balegemse steen' es un concepto en la historia de la arquitectura en Flandes. Se extrajo en la Tierra de Aalst y especialmente en Balegem. El uso de esta piedra blanda - de la familia de la arenisca lediana - experimentó un gran renacer en el siglo XII, alcanzando su apogeo en el período gótico. En el siglo XIX, la cantera cobró nueva vida, gracias a obras viales y, sobre todo, a numerosas restauraciones. La cantera es actualmente gestionada por la familia Verlee y sin duda merece una visita (¡a solicitar!). No hace falta decir que muchos monumentos recientes en nuestra región hicieron uso de estas piedras gigantescas y capriciosas con su cálido color.
