'La pietra di Balegem' è un concetto nella storia dell'architettura in Fiandra. Essa è stata estratta nella Terra di Aalst e soprattutto a Balegem. L'uso di questa pietra morbida - della famiglia della arenaria lediana - è rinato fortemente nel XII secolo per raggiungere un picco nel periodo gotico. Nel XIX secolo la cava di pietra rivisse, grazie ai lavori stradali e soprattutto grazie a sempre più numerose restaurazioni. Attualmente la cava è gestita dalla famiglia Verlee ed è sicuramente degna di una visita (da richiedere!). È evidente che molti monumenti recenti nella nostra regione hanno approfittato volentieri di queste pietre giganti e capricciose con il loro colore caldo!
