Dormaal es una subdivisión del municipio belga de Zoutleeuw. Dormaal fue un municipio independiente hasta la reorganización municipal de 1971. Antiguas formas: 1015 Tormales, 1139 Durmale, 1166 Tormale, 1206 Dormala, etc. Dormaal es una combinación del germano thurnu "espino" + mala "pendiente". Por lo tanto, Dormaal significa: pendiente cubierta de espinos. Pronto se hizo una distinción entre Opdormaal y Neerdormaal: 1293 nederdormale, opdormale.
