El alcalde de Gante, Braun, llegó a Oordegem en 1914 para negociar con el general alemán Boehn, para persuadirlo de no destruir Gante. En ese momento, esto aún se podía discutir porque el objetivo final de las tropas alemanas detenidas era París, y no Gante o Brujas. Como rescate, recibieron cien bicicletas, diez motocicletas y cien mil cigarros. Un mes después, los alemanes marcharon sobre Gante de todos modos.
