Der Gentner Bürgermeister Braun kam 1914 nach Oordegem, um mit dem deutschen General Boehn zu verhandeln und ihn zu überzeugen, Gent nicht zu zerstören. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt war es noch möglich, darüber zu sprechen, da das Endziel der zurückgehaltenen deutschen Truppen Paris und nicht Gent oder Brügge war. Als Lösegeld erhielten sie hundert Fahrräder, zehn Motorräder und hunderttausend Zigaretten. Einen Monat später marschieren die Deutschen dennoch in Gent ein.
