Grembergen es una aldea en la provincia belga de Flandes Oriental y un municipio del municipio de Dendermonde desde 1977. Grembergen se encuentra en la región de Dender, a orillas del Escalda, en la margen izquierda; Dendermonde en sí y las otras aldeas se encuentran al sur del río en la otra orilla.
A nivel administrativo y eclesiástico, la historia más antigua de Grembergen coincide con la de Zele. El nombre 'Grenberga' aparece por primera vez en documentos públicos en 1019. Grend está relacionado con grava o canto rodante, que significa arena de guijarros. Por lo tanto, Grembergen significa colinas de arena o colinas de grava. Esta referencia a las colinas de arena todavía la encontramos en la nomenclatura de las aldeas 'Klein Zand' y 'Groot Zand' en Grembergen.
