Grembergen è un villaggio nella provincia belga di Fiandre Orientali ed è una frazione della città di Dendermonde dal 1977. Grembergen si trova nella regione della Dender, lungo il fiume Schelda, sulla riva sinistra; Dendermonde stessa e le altre frazioni si trovano a sud del fiume, sull'altra sponda.
Dal punto di vista amministrativo e ecclesiastico, la storia più antica di Grembergen coincide con quella di Zele. Il nome 'Grenberga' appare per la prima volta in documenti pubblici nel 1019. Grend è correlato a ghiaia o ciottoli, che significa sabbia di ghiaia. Grembergen significa quindi colline di sabbia o colline di ciottoli. Questo riferimento alle colline di sabbia lo ritroviamo ancora oggi nei nomi dei borghi 'Klein Zand' e 'Groot Zand' a Grembergen.
