La famosa ciudad textil tiene su origen en la geología de la región. En el valle del Vesder se desarrolló rápidamente alguna actividad industrial. Además del trabajo del metal, la industria de la lana se volvió especialmente importante. Esta se benefició del agua baja en cal que provenía de las Altas Valles y que era muy adecuada para el lavado de la lana. En un documento de 1413 se menciona la existencia de cuatro tenderías. En el siglo XVII, la industria de la lana prácticamente relegó a la de metal.
