De beroemde textielstad heeft haar oorsprong in de geologie van de streek. In het dal van de Vesder ontwikkelde zich al snel enige industriële activiteit. Naast de metaalbewerking werd met name de lakennijverheid belangrijk. Deze profiteerde van het kalkarme water dat van de Hoge Venen afkomstig was en zeer geschikt was voor het wassen van de wol. In een document van 1413 werd melding gemaakt van vier volderijen. In de 17e eeuw verdrong de lakennijverheid die der metaalbewerking vrijwel geheel.
