La célèbre ville textile tire son origine de la géologie de la région. Dans la vallée de la Vesdre, une certaine activité industrielle s'est rapidement développée. En plus de la métallurgie, l'industrie drapière est devenue particulièrement importante. Elle a profité de l'eau pauvre en calcaire provenant des Hautes Fagnes, qui était très adaptée pour le lavage de la laine. Dans un document de 1413, il a été fait mention de quatre foulons. Au 17ème siècle, l'industrie drapière a presque entièrement remplacé celle de la métallurgie.
