Moerkerke es un pueblito en la provincia belga de Flandres Occidental y una parroquia del municipio de Damme. En la Edad Media, era un pueblo vibrante compuesto principalmente por comerciantes. Esto cambió tras el atascamiento del Zwin. Moerkerke fue mencionado por primera vez en el año 1110 como Murkerka. El nombre Moerkerke proviene de iglesia en un 'moer', que es una extracción de turba o un pantano. El patrón de calles rectilíneas se habría formado por la extracción sistemática.
