Moerkerke is a small village in the Belgian province of West Flanders and a part of the city of Damme. In the Middle Ages, it was a lively village primarily consisting of traders. This changed after the silting of the Zwin. Moerkerke was first mentioned in the year 1110 as Murkerka. The name Moerkerke comes from church in a 'moor', which is a peat reclamation or a swamp. The straight street pattern is thought to have arisen from systematic reclamation.
