El punto de referencia geodésico, conocido entre la gente como el « Bonhomme de fer » (el chico de hierro), se encuentra en el extremo sur del bosque. Junto con otros 85 puntos elevados (incluyendo la colina del León de Waterloo, el campanario de Mons, etc.) contribuyó en el siglo XIX a la elaboración del mapa de Bélgica, mediante triangulación. Más tarde, también se utilizó para el cálculo preciso de las longitudes y latitudes, la altitud, la gravedad... Aunque los sistemas de cálculo modernos lo han olvidado desde hace tiempo, el « Bonhomme de fer » sigue siendo un testigo silencioso de nuestra historia y del ingenio de nuestros antepasados.
