A pesar de que el mercado semanal de los martes y viernes de Hasselt se ha trasladado a la Plaza Coronel Dusart, la Gran Plaza se encuentra en el centro de la ciudad comercial de Hasselt.
Alrededor del año 1300 se creó esta plaza, que se convirtió en el centro de Hasselt. Aquí convergían las calles que conducían a las cuatro puertas de la ciudad. Inicialmente conocida como Op den marct, también recibió nombres como Graenmarct y Coorenmerct, hasta que finalmente se le conoció como Gran Plaza.
