Nonostante il mercato settimanale del martedì e del venerdì si sia spostato in Piazza Kolonel Dusart, la Grote Markt si trova nel cuore della città commerciale di Hasselt.
Circa nell'anno 1300 è emersa questa piazza, che divenne il centro di Hasselt. Qui confluivano le strade che conducevano ai quattro portoni della città. Inizialmente conosciuta come Op den marct, ha ricevuto anche nomi come Graenmarct e Coorenmerct per poi essere chiamata Grote Markt.
