¿Sabías que Albert Einstein fue residente de De Haan? Albert Einstein vivió en De Haan durante algunos meses en 1933. Después de una estancia como profesor visitante en los Estados Unidos, arribó al puerto de Amberes en su regreso a Alemania en marzo de 1933. Debido a que Adolf Hitler había sido elegido en Alemania ese mismo mes, la pareja Einstein decidió no regresar y se trasladó a De Haan, donde se instalaron en la parte izquierda de la villa doble 'Savoyarde' en la Shakespearelaan. Más tarde, también su hijastra Margot, su asistente Walther Mayer y su secretaria Helen Dukas se unieron a ellos. Finalmente, también se volvió demasiado peligroso para Einstein en Bélgica y el 9 de septiembre de 1933 abandonó De Haan de manera anónima, rumbo a Inglaterra, donde permaneció un tiempo. El 17 de octubre de 1933 se marchó definitivamente a los Estados Unidos.
