En el siglo XII, el bosque de Buggenhout formaba parte de un gigantesco bosque llamado 'Beuckenhoudt'. El municipio de Buggenhout debe su nombre a este bosque. Antes predominaban los hayas en este bosque, pero han tenido que ceder su lugar al roble de invierno. No encontrarás más robles de invierno en ninguna parte de Flandes que aquí. En 2013, el bosque se amplió en nada menos que 10 hectáreas. El Hollebeek serpentea por el valle del bosque. Aquí quizás puedas vislumbrar el raro salamandra de fuego. El bosque de Buggenhout es la región más septentrional de Bélgica donde se encuentra esta salamandra.
