El ayuntamiento de Lieja fue construido entre 1714 y 1729 en el emplazamiento del antiguo ayuntamiento gótico y frente al famoso andén, símbolo de la ansia de libertad urbana.
Este ayuntamiento, conocido popularmente como 'La Violette', es un gran edificio en forma de U con dos plantas, construido de ladrillo y piedra caliza alternos.
El gran vestíbulo es accesible a través de una impresionante escalera y está adornado con ocho columnas, cuatro pilastras de piedra negra y un estrado sostenido por cuatro atlantes de roble (1717/1718).
En este se encuentran ricamente decoradas habitaciones y salones, incluyendo en el primer piso la sala del consejo municipal, situada en la fachada, que es el escenario del vida política de Lieja.
