L'hôtel de ville de Liège a été construit entre 1714 et 1729 sur le site de l'ancien hôtel de ville gothique et en face du célèbre perron, symbole de l'aspiration à la liberté urbaine.
Cet hôtel de ville, communément appelé 'La Violette', est un grand bâtiment en forme de U de deux étages, en briques et en pierre calcaire alternées.
Le grand hall d'entrée est accessible par un imposant escalier et est orné de huit colonnes, quatre pilastres en pierre noire et un balcon soutenu par quatre atlantes en chêne (1717/1718).
À l'étage, on trouve des salles et des salons richement décorés, dont la salle du conseil municipal, située sur la façade avant, qui constitue la scène du théâtre politique liégeois.
