The Town Hall of Liège was built between 1714 and 1729 on the site of the old Gothic town hall and opposite the famous platform, a symbol of the city’s desire for freedom. This town hall, commonly referred to as 'La Violette', is a large U-shaped building with two stories, made of alternating brick and limestone. The large entrance hall is accessible via an imposing staircase and is adorned with eight columns, four pilasters in black stone, and a balcony supported by four oak atlantes (1717/1718). Richly decorated rooms and salons are located above, including the municipal council chamber on the first floor, situated at the front, which serves as the stage for Liège's political life.
