La Batalla de Messines se luchó en octubre de 1914 entre los ejércitos del imperio alemán y el imperio británico y Francia como parte de la Carrera al Mar, entre el río Douve y el canal Comines–Ypres. Desde el 17 de septiembre hasta el 17 de octubre, los beligerantes hicieron intentos recíprocos para envolver el flanco norte de su oponente. Joseph Joffre, el jefe del Gran Cuartel General, ordenó al Segundo Ejército Francés moverse al norte del Sexto Ejército, trasladándose por ferrocarril desde el este de Francia del 2 al 9 de septiembre. Erich von Falkenhayn, Jefe de la Oberste Heeresleitung, ordenó al Sexto Ejército alemán moverse desde la frontera germano-francesa hacia el flanco norte el 17 de septiembre. Al día siguiente, los ataques franceses al norte del Aisne llevaron a Falkenhayn a ordenar al Sexto Ejército repeler las fuerzas francesas para asegurar el flanco.
