Un tilo es un árbol cultural. Los germanos veneraban a la diosa Freya en forma de un tilo. Freya también era sabia y representaba la justicia. Por eso a menudo se impartía justicia bajo un tilo. Después de la cristianización, la costumbre de veneración no desapareció. Por eso se adoptó el concepto y se unió a María con el árbol como una alternativa a Freya. De ahí que todavía veas con mucha frecuencia capillas de María asociadas a los tilos.
